ISO 9001 is the world’s most widespread management standard: it sets requirements for a quality management system that ensures the organisation consistently delivers products and services meeting customer and regulatory requirements, and improves continuously.
The standard is built on process orientation, risk-based thinking and PDCA. Certification is done through accredited certification bodies with annual audits. ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026 and supersedes ISO 9001:2015 (with Amendment 1:2024 on climate considerations), which remains valid for the length of the transition. The transition must be complete by 30 September 2029, and from 31 March 2028 no new accredited certificates can be issued against the 2015 edition.
The pitfall is building the system for the auditor instead of for operations: a quality system that only lives in documents passes audits but prevents no defects.
