How to use this template
Tier meetings are a cascading system of short, daily to monthly meetings that connect the floor with management. Problems a team can't solve itself are escalated upward; direction and priority cascade down. The structure is the core of Daily Management.
When do you use it?
When you want operations to solve its own daily problems and only escalate what genuinely requires a higher mandate. Introduce Tier 1 first — make it work before you add Tier 2 and 3.
Time & rhythm
- Tier 1: 15 min daily.
- Tier 2: 45 min weekly.
- Tier 3: 60 min monthly.
- Fixed times — non-negotiable.
Step by step
- Hold the meeting at the board, standing, at the same time every time.
- Review numbers and deviations — not status rounds.
- A problem the team can't solve today is escalated to the next tier.
- Every escalation has an owner and a deadline.
- Decisions and priorities from the top tier cascade back down.
- Measure whether the meetings are actually held — the completion rate is the first KPI.
Watch out
- Don't skip the meetings when it's busy — that's exactly when they matter most.
- Escalate problems, not blame — the goal is to solve, not to assign responsibility.
- A tier meeting without an escalation path is just another status meeting.
Example
Tier 1 finds that a machine is losing pace due to a faulty sensor they can't source. It's escalated to Tier 2, where maintenance prioritises the purchase — and Tier 1 gets an answer the next day.
Method: Daily Management; cf. David Mann, “Creating a Lean Culture” (2010).
