Methods & toolsA3 Problem Solving

What is A3 problem solving?

A3 is a structured problem-solving method where the entire analysis — background, current state, target, root cause, countermeasures and follow-up — is documented on a single A3 sheet. The format forces clarity: if the problem can’t be explained on one page, it isn’t understood.

The A3’s real value is the process, not the paper: the method forces the problem owner to go to the gemba, separate symptom from cause and test countermeasures with PDCA. The leader’s role is to ask questions of the analysis — not to provide the solution.

A3 is also used as a coaching tool: through repeated A3 cycles, employees are trained in systematic thinking.
