What is 5S?

5S is a systematic method for organising the workplace to increase efficiency, safety and quality. The five S's come from Japanese and form the foundation of lean production.

Purpose

To create a clean, organised and efficient workplace where waste is minimised, problems are made visible, and employees can focus on value-adding work.

Tips for good visual standards

• Always use real photos from your own workplace
• Clearly show the difference between correct and wrong
• Keep the text short and action-oriented
• Place the standard where the work is done
• Review and update standards quarterly
